Themes

Contributions may focus on the geoenvironmental, socio-economic, historical, geographical, legal and political aspects of the development trajectories of mining territories.

All scales of time (from the year to the millenium) and space (from the village scale to regional scale) can be invesetigated. Contributions may include a diachronic approach orfocus on a specific period (e.g., mine operation vs. after mine operation). Comparisons of several mining territories will be welcome.

Cross-disciplinary contributions will be particularly appreciated. They may relate to the following topics, in a non-limiting way:

  • The determining role of the geological context in the development of a mining territory;
  • The diirect or indirect socio-economic benefits (through the development of other activities such as wood production, energy, etc.) of the extractive industry and their consequences for territorial development (infrastructures, transport, etc.);
  • The environmental impacts of mining activity(water, soil, air, living organisms, etc. contamination) and the role of the geological context;
  • The incoming and outgoing materials fluxes (mineral raw materials, wood, water, energy, etc.);
  • Migration: the development and transfer of technical skills and specialized trades;
  • The evolution of mining techniques and their impacts on societies and the environment during the different periods of exploitation;
  • The relations between the extractive practices and the local legislative and political framework;
  • The socio-economic and political strategies of mining companies;
  • The perception of the extractive industry and social mobilizations;
  • The economic reconversion of the mining territories and the consequences of the the end of operation on the territories;
  • The rehabilitation and remediation of mining territories;
  • The valorization of the mining heritage (patrimonialization, processing of mining residues, etc.)

The sessions and the program of the meeting will be defined, at the beginning of July 2018, according to the contributions received.
